Guerilla-MFA Mini Semester

For writers of prose considering an MFA program; postgraduates looking for a refresher; or indie spirits thumbing their noses at academia. A half-semester individual course of study that mimics the experience of working one-on-one with a faculty advisor in a low-residency MFA program. Includes craft annotations, assigned readings and discussion, and Shannon’s feedback on up to 30 pages of creative work every three or four weeks. Correspondence via email, video or audio calls, or in-person cafe meetings, if you happen to be in Paris.

Manuscript Review

Novel, short story collection, memoir, creative nonfiction, autofiction. Maximum 125,000 words.

Close reading, detailed critique letter (10-12 pages, single spaced), lots of margin comments.

60-minute skype conversation, or if you find yourself in Paris, a good long lunch.

"Validation is important, go and get some. But once you’ve gotten it, it’s time for criticism. Real criticism is much harder to find, and it’s much more important when it comes to improving your book.

A good outside reader is someone who holds you to a higher standard, someone who wants more from you than you might really be capable of, who sees the book on your terms, but raises the bar for you by showing you what might be possible in your revisions.
